SALE: Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Kimo Style

Regular Price: $15.98

Special Price: $2.00

Hawaiian slack key guitar (ki ho'alu) is one of the great acoustic guitar traditions of the world, dating back to the 1840's when guitars were first brought to Hawaii and relatively unknown outside the islands until recently. "Slack Key" means that some of the strings are slacked from standard tuning, with the bass, melody, and improvisation played at the same time, and is often played to accompany traditional dance or song. Many players use their own special tunings that often remain proprietary secrets.
Jim "Kimo" West first visited Hana, Maui in 1985, after a long summer on the road as guitarist for famed musical satirist, "Weird Al" Yankovic. As the sounds of Gabby Pahinui, the Sons of Hawai'i, Sonny Chillingworth, The Sunday Manoa, and others, played on the turntable, he jammed along for fun and relaxation. Already a devotee of open tunings, he was immediately drawn to the gentle rhythms of ki ho 'alu (slack key guitar) and soon began writing his own songs. The rich physical and cultural landscape of the Hana Coast has provided the inspiration for many of his compositions.

While always retaining the heartfelt essence of traditional slack key, Jim "Kimo" West brings much of his own musical heritage to his original ki ho'alu instrumentals. His style can best be described as "nahenahe", meaning "soft, sweet or gentle voice", a fusion of old and new but still rooted deeply in tradition.

Jim lives in Los Angeles where he writes and produces music for film and television. His music has graced feature films and TV shows on all the major networks and cable channels and his slack key compositions have been featured on National Public Radio, Honda TV spots as well as the Disney Channel . He travels regularly to the islands to perform, relax and visit with his "ohana". He also performs slack key concerts around the mainland US, especially in the Southern California area, and at selected private events.

SALE: My Serenity

Regular Price: $15.98

Special Price: $2.00

Thirty-one years ago, in the town of Ha’iku, Maui, Neal Yamamura was born. Neal, the only male grandchild on his maternal side, celebrated his first BOYS’ DAY with 27 carp kites, gifts for his maternal grandfather in celebration of his first boy.

At the age of 4, he developed an interest in playing the piano, thus beginning his formal music education. By the 5th grade, he learned to play, on the piano, his elementary school’s entire spring musical just through listening! As a senior independent project, Neal composed and conducted a piece for his high school’s Spring Band Concert. In addition to piano, he is also skilled in playing the bells, baritone, and ukulele.

While in college, Neal discovered his passion and talent for singing karaoke, particularly the Hawaiian falsetto songs. He and several of his karaoke-singing buddies formed the group, Five by 5. Together they recorded 2 albums and performed at various local venues. Neal has studied with vocal coaches including Lani Starr and Melveen Leed. During breaks from practicing and recording, he also sang with his church’s worship team.

When Five by 5 disbanded, he asked his folks to help finance a solo recording of Hawaiian and pop songs that he has always loved. The result is this album, “My Serenity.”

Neal’s passions ranged from coaching gymnastics and spring-board diving, teaching swimming, playing volleyball, and lifeguarding. However, music remains his true passion, so he hopes his love for singing will be shared by his audiences. His quiet, shy personality can be experienced through his singing…thus “My Serenity.”

SALE: The White Bathtub

Regular Price: $15.98

Special Price: $3.00

This project has been a revelation of dreams come true, thanks to those who are living and those who have passed. The collective `ike of all who have shared their na‘au with me, brings me to this path I now walk.

Starting with unrecorded material I had previously written, I began writing new songs, as this album took on a life of its own. In the end, the title unveiled itself. "The White Bathtub" holds many levels of kaona, hidden meanings, that only reveal what the listener asks for.

In this journey called life, we have the responsibility to honor the past, live in the now and leave our heart-prints for future generations. My joys, my fears, my hopes, and my beliefs are contained in "The White Bathtub" that still sits in the middle of my gramma's yard. I hope you jump in too!

SALE: Aloha Monday

Regular Price: $15.98

Special Price: $2.00

Does anyone remember Aaron Kaleo Agsalda as a member of "the five-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning band, the Krush" back in the days when the Krush was actually winning Hokus?
Neither do I, but whatever Agsalda may have contributed to a later version of the group, he is unquestionably ready for prime time as a solo act here. Think Kenny Rankin, think Michael Franks; those are the musical footsteps he's following.

The opening song introduces Kaleo as an accomplished singer-songwriter. All the pieces are originals, and any of them would be a natural fit on any "easy listening" radio station. Kaleo's voice is the key element here, but there's a song or two that also shows his talent as a guitarist as well. Todd Adamski (electric guitar/bass), Wendell Ching (drums) and Rocky Holmes (sax/flute) provide instrumental support and forge the musical links to Rankin, Franks and even, at times, Kalapana.

Kaleo's music stands on its own merit as a singer-songwriter's perspectives on life and love. His images certainly mirror the feelings of romantics everywhere. And although much of his musical bag is soft and romantic, several songs describe the painful and frustrating sides of love in convincing style.

The album art adds a touch of mystery. There's a map of Oahu with 10 numbered locations. Do the song numbers tie in to those places? It seems that that's for him to know and for us to find out.

SALE: An Island

Regular Price: $15.98

Special Price: $2.00

Born on the island of Kauai to a Hawaiian-Chinese mother and an Irish-Swedish father, Ed Kenney was to prove himself equally adept on stage, in nightclubs, and in recording studios. The popular baritone epitomizes the native son in love with his homeland; his ability and dedication to Hawaiian music new and old kept him in business for decades. Kenney attended prep school on a piano scholarship won in junior high; from there he went to the University of Oregon, where he appeared in productions such as Brigadoon. Returning to Hawaii, he took lead roles in productions at the Honolulu Community Theater and began nightclub singing and recording. Back on the mainland in 1955, he won a Rodgers and Hammerstein scholarship and appeared in Broadway's Shangri-La. Kenney then went back to Hawaii for singing engagements with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Kenney signed with Columbia Pictures, but instead of making movies, he chose to take a part in Flower Drum Song. Shortly thereafter, Kenney's friend Eaton Magoon, Jr. wrote 13 Daughters — Broadway's first Hawaiian musical — for Kenney, spotlighting his ability to sing in Hawaiian and English as well as true Hawaiian falsetto. Kenney returned to Hawaii in 1961 to headline at Duke Kahanamoku's for many months. His later career is distinguished by comedy material (including some novelty songs firmly in the Hawaiian tradition of poking fun at ethnicity), as well as songs in the modern style developed by Kui Lee and Don Ho.

Ziggy is currently touring the U.S. in support of "Love Is My Religion" which is available exclusively at Target.
