Moloka'i Jam is composed in honor of people's relationship to their environment. When we get down to the bones of what Hawaii composition and vocal delivery is about, what we're really talking about is how we connect to the animate world, the inanimate world, and our inner world. Moloka'i Jam is a piece that recounts the wahi pana (pronounced - vah-hee pahnah). Wahi Pana are pulsing places and sacred spaces. To know the nomenclature or character and story of a place is to know the people and vice versa. This song was composed by Kaumakaiwa Kealiikanakaoleohaililani, my son, to first, honor his hosts that introduced him to the beautiful space of Moloka'i, and second, to remember the stories of each of those places. Each verse of the song contains within in its poetry a multi-generational history of social-ecological knowledge about each place on Moloka'i. When we know the space we live in with intimacy, we then know our individual connection to the Hawaii Universe.
