Taking a quick overnight trip to Hana, Maui to explore a new artist, CJ Helekahi, was certainly a night to remember! With laughing, drinking, music, & dancing we had ourselves a good time! You can't help but think - "THIS is exactly what Hawai`i is all about!"
The legendary HOTEL HANA, located at the end of the Hana highway is majestic & beautiful in all aspects. There is no adjusting period - you are at home & will find yourself happily contented. Between the lulling waves of the ocean, the happy song of the hawaiian gecko, and the soft ocean breeze you will experience the best night's sleep of your life. Needless-to-say, my night stay was a dream come true.
The Paniolo Lounge in Hotel Hana is a hot spot for locals & tourists alike. Offering nightly hawaiian entertainment like Hawaiian falsetto singer Leokane Pryor & up-and-coming musican, CJ Helekahi. The hotel also offers Hula Shows for dinner guests with elegant dancers & cute little hula girls. If you're in Hana be sure to check out the Paniolo Lounge! Call 808-248-8211 for a weekly schedule.

The view that stops anyone in their tracks.
The lush wildlife of a tropical paradise.
Waterfalls... need I say more?
I couldn't help but include this in the blog. The Hana District Police Station & Courthouse 1871 - 1978. You can't help but coin the phrase "It's so cute!"
This photo is from the HOTEL HANA website. I couldn't help but use it - it captures the unbelievable view of the property perfectly.
The Hotel Hana's restaurant, Ka’uiki was a top choice for the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for three consecutive years, since 2007. The hotel holds their Hula Shows here as well. Making your dining experience an all around event.
Adorable hula girls dancing to their heart's content.
Leokane & CJ play regularly at the Paniolo Lounge. Call 808-248-8211 for a weekly schedule.
Special Mahalo to all in Hana. It was a magical experience that I hope to repeat often. The warmth & aloha of Hana is nothing to take for granted. Hana will always have a place in my heart.
In 1995 I was living in San Francisco. I had been gone from Hawaii and my culture for many years. My mom was dying of cancer and some friends thought it would be healing for me to go and listen to some Hawaiian music. We went to see Keali'i Reichel in concert with "Kawaipunahele". That night was a turning point in my life. Sitting in my chair I was overwhelmed with the spirit and the beauty of the music. After that night I asked some musician
friends to record a few Hawaiian songs to send to my mom who was living on the mainland- and missed Hawaii so much. The music brought comfort and peace to her- and she told me that I should be singing Hawaiian music- the music that I truly loved. I promised her I would. Four years later I released my first CD, "Maunahele", dedicated in loving memory to my mom.
When Keali'i invited me to be a part of "Kukahi" I could not believe it. The whole experience was simply magical and dreamlike: the music so 'ono, the hula so stunningly beautiful. And the true highlight of the weekend was to
sing with and befriend Uncle Bill Kaiwa. To create beautiful music with two legendary singers that I admire so much was a moment I will never forget. Talk about chicken skin! My hope is that my music will touch people's
hearts in the way that Keali'i's music has touched mine: the true gift of aloha.
Uncle Bill Kaiwa had this to say about Leokane:
"Leokane was such a gentleman. His voice, his lyrics and his music are a beautiful example of how aloha comes through all who love Hawaii. I so enjoyed performing with Leokane and cannot wait to sing with him on stage again!"
This Saturday (January 30th) Leokane will be performing to celebrate the Grand Opening of the Martin & MacArthur at Whaler's Village, Ka'anapali, Maui from 10am - Noon.
On May 18th, 2009 Leokane Pryor and Friends performed at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai with Jake Shimabukuro (see related post here). For those of you who missed this wondeful evening of performances, here is a video of Leokane Pryor and Friends performing "Hana No Ka'oi" off of Leokane's album "Home Malanai"
Redondo Beach, California is lucky enough to have the 2nd Aloha Falsetto Festival this summer on July 18th at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center. To sweeten the pot they have Hana's own Leokane Pryor performing, Richard Ho'opi'i and many more great artists. In the traditional Festival Fashion there are other things to keep you busy like Hula Performances, Island Market Marketplace and Hawaiian Food. There are two shows at 2pm and 7pm, visit their site at http://alohafalsettofest.com/ for tickets and details on all performances!
This looks like this is going to be a BIG ONE, and more importantly a GREAT SHOW.
This is the kind of show that really kicks off the summer in Hawai`i.
