Mailani – To extol, praise . . . to treat as a chief, as a great favorite . . . to indulge, spoil, to favor! Truly, Mailani the artist, continues to live up to the meaning of her name with this, her 2nd solo project.

With a collection of mele (song) diverse by era, subject and composer, Mailani treats each song as a personal favorite and makes each one her own . . . At first glance, one would think that this is seemingly a random collection of songs, but if one looks closely, one will see the threads of life that connect this modern Hawaiian woman of the 21st century to the roots of her cultural identity and traditional past. Like her name, she extols the beauty of, her love for, and the many delights of her 'aina hanau or homeland, family and life itself. She favors us with newly composed mele while she indulges our senses with her haunting renditions and renderings of songs associated with a different era, a different time, a different place, a different sound – making them fresh, giving them new life, as well as new perspectives; one can feel, as well as hear, the maturation of Mailani the artist and Mailani the woman.

Ha'ina mai ka puana means the story is told, but as long as she continues to be guided by the meaning of her name, Mailani will continue to extol and praise her island heritage and indulge, favor and spoil us with more glimpses and hidden peeks into her musical soul.

There at Heeia
We go surfing on the waves
Tra la la la, tra la la la

Surfing of the crest
Returning on the diagonal wave
Tra la la la, tra la la la

Tis I who criss-crossed
The edge of the shore
Tra la la la, tra la la la

I mistakenly thought
You were in my arms
Tra la la la, tra la la la

I groped in vain
The meshes of the mat

Shy was the bird
That lives in the uplands

Tell the refrain of
The over-sized beak of the bird
Tra la la la, tra la la la

The end of my story
In honor of Kaleleonalani
Tra la la la, tra la la la

Where are you my love
I call unto you
In the darkness of the night
Answer me, answer me

Come closer into my arms
I kiss you, you kiss me
For I love you
Answer me, answer me

Turn, turn your body (to me)
Pleasantly warm and calm
You and I are encircled with love
Answer me, answer me

You are so pleasing my love
At making love
Feelings surge
Answer me, answer me

E ka lei hulu nani hulu melemele

He mele kaulana no Nihoa
Ua hui Kane`ohe me Pohoiki

Ha`ina `ia mai ana ka puana
Goodbye kāua me ka `eha`eha

Listen, you bird
My companion who weathers gossip of the cold night

This cold is nothing to my mind
The heart's desire is ever urgent

Who can escape you
You are like the bud of the lehua

The eye of the lehua is what I love
The adornment that sways to the coming

Let`s kiss, love
The lehua flower mists

Don`t rush me
The maile's leaves are trembling

Jealous is the mind of the captain
Engulfing are the waves of the ocean

My mind is made up
Lei of beautiful feathers, golden feathers

Nihoa's song is famous
Joined were Kane`ohe and Poho`iki

The story is told
We say goodbye with great pain

Kaula ‘Ili

Ho`omakaukau ko kaula `ili
I luna o ka pu`u Kanakaleonui
Ho`olohe i ke kani o nā manu
O never mind ua hina pū ua hiki nō
O never mind ua hina pū ua hiki nō

O `oe ka i huia ihola
Ka mana`o e pua pua`i `ala
Eia o pu`u o hulu
Ulu nō wau ua hiki nō
Ulu nō wau ua hiki nō

I loko o ka ulu la`au
E ki`i ana i na pipi kuni`ole
Ho`olei i hola ke kaula `ili
O never mind a komo `oe a komo`ole
O never mind a komo `oe a komo`ole

Pa`a hola ka pipi kuni`ole
Ho`opili i ke kumu mamane
Pa`a hola ka lio i ka alu
O never mind a lilo `oe pau ela no
O never mind a lilo `oe pau ela no

Kau mai ka hau o Mauna Kea
Ka makani hu`ihu`i ke kino
E huli ho`i nei kēia
O never mind a ho`i au a ho`i`ole
O never mind a ho`i au a ho`i`ole

Make ready your lariat
Put it over the throat, of the man with the big voice
Heed the cry of birds
Never mind, you will fall, it is done
Never mind, you will fall, it is done

You are the one who was met
My constantly recurring thought
Here is a group of special people
I am inspired, it is done
I am inspired, it is done

There in the forest,
Catching the unbranded cattle
Caught by the throw of the rawhide rope
Never mind if you come in or not
Never mind if you come in or not

The unbranded steer is held tight
Bound to the mamane tree
The horse holds fast to the slack
Never mind if its lost to you, that's how it is
Never mind if its lost to you, that's how it is

The snows settle on Mauna Kea
The cold wind is upon the body
So this one turns to go back
Never mind if you return or not
Never mind if you return or not

Yesterday

Yesterday,
All my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though theyre here to stay
Oh, I believe in Yesterday

Suddenly,
I'm not half the man I used to be
Theres a shadow hanging over me
Oh, Yesterday, Came Suddenly

Why she had to go
I don't know
She wouldn't say
I said something wrong
Now I long for Yesterday

Yesterday
Love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in Yesterday

Why she had to go
I don't know
She wouldnt say
I said something wrong
Now I long for Yesterday...

Hawaiian Eyes

Often in the darkness
Sometimes in the light
Visions of your golden eyes
Sparkle in my sight.
Haunted by those graceful years
When we were young and life was sharp and clear.

Hui:
Can you see me now; Hawaiian eyes?
Can you see me lost from paradise?
There were so many ways to go
So many things to know
But I've missed you inside
Hawaiian eyes

Shouting in the mountains
Silent by the stream
Our eyes held each others'
Locked in secret dreams.
Now we're freed and drifting on
Memories of you hover still and strong.

Oh, Hawaiian eyes

Big fish, move back and forth
Move to satisfy, move back and forth
Touch the sky, move back and forth
Tumble down, move back and forth

Chorus:
Prepare, move back and forth

Big fish, move back and forth
Caught in the hand, move back and forth
Reaching here, move back and forth
Twisting about, move back and forth

Big fish, move back and forth
Enter, move back and forth
Captured in the net, move back and forth
That is ours, move back and forth

Big fish, move back and forth
Take it easy, move back and forth
Or you'll get loose, move back and forth
Before we finish, move back and forth

No friends
It`s been many years
And someday I`ll be gone

I wish you would stay
But if you can't, don`t
I`ll always caress you
I`ll always love you

I'll go by the sea
To pass the time with the tide
The sands comfort me
And wipe my tears away

I see
Your beauty
Freshened by
The light rain

I hear
Your sweet voice
I hold fast
To your love

You are the love
That is mine to cherish
Here in the center
Of my being

The sound of the whistle
Carries across the plain
Inviting me to
Move that way

This song honors
My beloved students
Freshened by
The light rain

Still Haven't Found
What I'm Looking For

I have climbed highest mountains
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you
Only to be with you

I have run
I have crawled
I have scaled these city walls
These city walls
Only to be with you

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for

I have kissed honey lips
Felt the healing in her fingertips
It burned like a fire
This burning desire

I have spoke with the tongue of angels
I have held the hand of a devil
It was warm in the night
I was cold as a stone

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for

I believe in the Kingdom Come
Then all the colors will bleed into one
Bleed into one
But yes I'm still running

You broke the bonds
And you loosed the chains
Carried the cross
Of my shame
Oh my shame
You know I believe it

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
