Mailani LINER NOTES

Mailani, best known for her collaborative efforts as a member of the Na Hoku Hanohano award winning duo Keahiwai and more recently the trio Mighty J, steps into the spotlight as a solo artist displaying the depth of her talents. This album presents innovative yet respectful interpretations of Hawaiian standards, as well as several original compositions in both Hawaiian and English. Mailani blends the contemporary and the traditional in ways that will delight aficionados of both genres.

Throughout the history of recorded music in Hawai‘i, generations of listeners have been enthralled by a seemingly endless procession of female vocalists whose joyful voices rival the sweetest sounding native birds of the forest. Some are so unique that they can be identified by first name alone - Lena, Genoa, Emma, Nina, Melveen, Loyal. Today, this rich tradition is carried on by - Teresa, Darlene, Amy, Raiatea. Only time will tell if Mailani will earn a place among her predecessors in the pantheon of Hawaiian music, but this solo debut is certainly an auspicious beginning.

Mailani LYRICS

1. Penei Iho, Penei Aʻe, Penei Nō

Mai ha‘i mai e ke hoa ē
E alia mai a pa‘a ka mana‘o
‘O ‘oe paha kai kānalua
E kau ka maka iā Ha‘eha‘e

Hui:

Peni iho, penei a‘e, penei nō
Mai waiho mai ia‘u
O hoka auane‘i ‘oe
E haka pono mai i o‘u maka
E ‘ike ai i ka li‘a loko

Hui…

I pa‘a pono ku‘u mana‘o
Pehea mai nō ho‘i kou?
Na wai e ‘ole ke aloha lā?
Nou nō lei ‘ilima

Don’t tell me dear friend
To wait until I am certain
You are perhaps the one who doubts
Let your eyes behold Ha’eha’e

Like this, like that, that’s how I want you
Don’t abandon me
Or you may find yourself disappointed
Stare deeply into my eyes
To know my yearning

My mind is made up
How about yours?
Who can refuse this love?
Forever yours – I am this lei ‘ilima

Composed by: Mailani Makainai, Keola Donaghy

2. Ho`oheno Kēia no Beauty

Ho‘oheno kēia no Beauty
Ku‘u hoa i ka ua Tuahine
Ea e, ea e
Ka ua Tuahine
I laila ho‘i au lā ‘ike
I ka u‘i o ka pua miulana
Ea e, ea e
Ka pua miulana
Ka‘u nui ko‘u mana‘o
E inu a kena ia wai
Ea e, ea e
A kena ia wai
Nāu i hehi kū ia kapu
Ia pua nani a ke kupuna
Ea e, ea e
A ke kûpuna
No Puna ke ‘ala
He ‘ala hoe nei ku‘u poli
Ea e, ea e
Ku`u poli
Ha‘ina ‘ia mai ka puana
Ku‘u ipo i ka ua Tuahine
Ea e, ea e
Ka ua Tuahine

This beauty is cherished
My companion in the Tuahine rain
Tra la la la
The Tuahine rain
I see her there
The beautiful miulan blossom
Tra la la la
The muilan blossom
My great desire is
To drink this water until satisfied
Tra la la la
The water that satisfies
You are the special one
The beautiful flower of your grandparents
Tra la la la
Of your grandparents
From Puna the fragrance is wafted
Here, the fragrance is taken into my bosom
Tra la la la
My bosom
Tell the refrain
My sweetheart in the Tuahine rain
Tra la la la
The Tuahine rain

Composed by: John K. Almeida, John Noble & Latouche

3. Hihia Ke Aloha

Hihia ke aloha i He‘eia
Eia ho‘i au i ka lihikai
Kai he‘ehe‘e i ka ‘ili
Ilihia ho‘i au i kou nani
Aia ‘o Mā‘eli‘eli i ka mālie
He lei nou i kui ‘ia
I makana na ka nohea
Heahea mai ka makani
I ke kai māne‘one‘o
Aia ‘o Mā‘eli‘eli i ka mālie
Ha‘ina kou wehi i He‘eia
Eia ho‘i au i ka lihikai
Kai he‘ehe‘e i ka ‘ili
Aia ‘o Mā‘eli‘eli i ka mālie

Love is entangled in Heʻeia
Here I am at the waterʻs edge
The sea water is slippery on my skin
I am awestruck by your beauty
Mäʻeliʻeli stands in the tranquility
A lei strung for you
As a loving gift for the handsome one
The wind beckons
At the tickling water
Mäʻeliʻeli stands waiting
Tell of the refrain of the beauty in Heʻeia
Here I am at the waterʻs edge
The sea is slippery on my skin
Mäʻeliʻeli stands in the tranquility

Composed by: Mailani Makainai

4. Ka Uluwehi O Ke Kai

He ho‘oheno ke ‘ike aku
Ke kai moana nui lā
Nui ke aloha e hi‘ipoi nei
Me ke ‘ala o ka līpoa
He līpoa i pae i ke one
Ke one hinuhinu lā
Wela i ka lā kē hehi a‘e
Mai mana‘o he pono kēia
Ho‘okohukohu e ka limu kohu
Ke kau i luna o nā moku lā
‘O ia moku ‘ula-la-e-hō
‘Oni ana i ‘ō i ‘ane‘i
Ha‘ina mai ka puana
Ka līpoa me ka limu kohu
Hoapili ‘oe me ka pāhe’e
‘Ānoni me ka līpalu

Such a delight to see
The great big ocean
So familiar and very cherished
With its fragrance of the lïpoa
It is lïpoa which washed ashore
Onto the shiny white sand
Hot from the heating sun as you step on it
Don’t think that this is fun
How enticing is the display of limu kohu
Atop the rocks
Enticing one to pick them
As they sway to and fro
Let the story be told
Of the lïpoa and the limu kohu
Close companions of the pähe`e
Intermingled with the lïpalu

Composed by: Edith Kanaka`ole

5. Poni Aloha

He aloha nō ‘oe, Ponialoha,

Ku‘u lei, ke aloha, pili i ka poli,
Ku‘u wehi, e sweet carnation i ‘ane‘i
He mana‘o iā ‘oe, keiki o ka lani,

I ke ‘ala onaona, pua o Hawai‘i,
Ha‘aheo nō ka lei i aloha ‘ia
Ha‘ina ‘ia mai ana ka puana,
He aloha nō ‘oe, Ponialoha.

Composed by: George Huddy

6. By Yourself

You’ve got to let me go
I’ve told you I no longer care
Can you ever be alone?
Cause baby, I’m no longer there

When the moon shines,
When the sun rises,
When the rain falls
I’ll be somewhere else
When the phone rings,
When you’re looking through my things
When the lights go out I’ll be somewhere else
And you’ll be by yourself.

You know we’ve been trying for too long
You’re always right I’m always wrong
I think its fair to say we gave it our best shot
I’m not trying to be vindictive
I just don’t want to be evicted
From the corners of my heart

When the moon shines
When the sun rises
When the rain falls I’ll be somewhere else
When the phone rings
When you’re looking through my things
When the lights go out
I’ll be somewhere else and you’ll be by yourself

Composed by: Mailani Makainai

7. Ua Like

Ua like nō a like
Me ka ua Kanilehua
Me he ala e ‘ī mai ana
Aia i laila ke aloha

Hui:

‘O ‘oe nō ka‘u i ‘upu ai
Ku‘u lei hiki ahiahi
‘O ke kani a nā manu
I nā hola o ke aumoe
Ma ‘anei mai kāua
He welina pa‘a i ka piko
A nāu nō au ‘imi a‘e
A loa‘a i ke aheahe a ka makani
He moani ka‘u i honi
‘Oiai eia i ka midnight
Me na kipona waianuhea
Ka mā‘alo a‘e i ku‘u maka

It is like the rain
That produces the lehua blossom
It seems to say to me
Love is there

Chorus:

You are the one I’m thinking of
My beloved who comes in the evening
The songs of birds are heard
In the hours of night
Come, let us be here together
With a love that binds us both
I will let you come to seek
And find me where the gentle breezes blow
I smell a wind borne perfume
Here at midnight
With other subtle odors
That pass before me

Composed by: Alice Everett

8. Stay for the Day

Summer all year long
You love me even when its wrong
I just don’t know what to say.
People talk about us even though there’s not much to discuss
Baby I’ll fly in for the day.

Its funny how we’re here once again
I really wanted to be life long friends but I

Want you, I need you, I want you to stay
I want you, I need you, I want you to stay

It’ll be awkward for a while
But hearing you laugh really makes me smile
You just can’t quit on us yet.
Its funny how we’re on the mend
These things I’ve done I intend to
Make it like we first met.

Its funny how we’re here once again
I really wanted to be life long friends but I

Want you, I need you, I want you to stay
I want you, I need you, I want you to stay

Composed by: Mailani Makainai

9. He Mele no Kahaluʻu

Aia i Kahalu‘u ka ulu hala
‘A‘ala i ka ua Pō‘aihale
Lele ka wai a‘o Waihe‘e
Wai he‘ahe‘a i ka ‘ili
Ka puīa o Pākole ua hala
Kole ka ‘āina i ka lā wela
Kai emi, kai ho‘i a‘i Waiāhole
He āhole ka i‘a, hole ke aloha
‘Ilikea a ‘ilikou ho‘i kāua
I ke kili ua nō e pili ai
Pili pa‘a mai ana i ka mao a‘e
Nōweo ka lā i ka ‘ilima
Ha‘ina ka puana no Kahalu‘u
‘A‘ala i ka ua Pō‘aihala
La‘i wale ka wai a‘o
Waihe‘e
Wai he‘ahe‘a i ka ‘ili

There in Kahaluʻu is the pandanus grove
Fragrant from the Pōʻaihale rain
The waters of Waiheʻe bursts forth
The water which reddens the skin
The fragrance of Päkole has passed
Land is made barren by scorching sun
The receding sea, the sea returning to Waiähole
The ähole is a fish, love is restless
We are of light and dark skin
Clinging together in the rain
Still bound firmly as the rain clears
The sun shines brightly on the ʻilima flower
Let the refrain be told for Kahaluʻu
Fragrant from the Pōʻaihala rain
The waters of Waiheʻe are tranquil
The water which reddens the skin

Composed by: Mailani Makainai, Keola Donaghy

10. Pua Lili Lehua

‘Auhea wale ana ‘oe

A he ipo ho‘ohenoheno
E ho‘ohihi ai no ka mana‘o
Iā ‘oe e ‘imi ana
I nā nani o ka ‘āina
Eia nō lā au ma ‘ane‘i
E kali ana i kou ho‘i mai
E ‘alawa mai ho‘i ‘oe
I nei mau maka onaona
He mau maka poina ‘ole
E kapalili ai ko pu‘uwai
Hilo pa‘a ‘ia ke aloha
I ka lino hilo pāwalu
‘A‘ohe mea e hemo ai
Me au ‘oe a mau loa
Ha‘ina mai ka puana
E ka pua lili lehua
A he ipo ho‘ohenoheno
E ho‘ohihi ai no ka mana‘o

This is to you
O sage blossom
A cherished sweetheart
That attracts the mind
While you go seeking
Among the beauties of the land
Right here I remain
Waiting for your return
Glance quickly this way
At these inviting eyes
These unforgettable eyes
That makes my heart tremble
Love is bound fast
With an eight strand lei
There is nothing to separate
You from me forever
This story is told for you
O sage blossom
A cherished sweetheart
That attracts the mind

Composed by: Mary Puku`i, Kahauanu Lake

‘O ‘oe kā ia, e te tiare

Ke koho pono a ka pu’uwai

The choice of my heart
I ke ‘ala e milimili
I ka nani e ho’onanea
Lingering in the fragrance

Delighting in the beauty
‘O ka ‘i’ini, ‘o ke aloha

E lilo ‘oe he ipo na’u
The desire, the love

To have you as a sweetheart
Ma cherie, ma cherie

Eia ho’i au

J’taime, j’taime te tiare
My sweetheart, my sweetheart

Here I am

I love, I love the tiare blossom

Composed by: Frank Hewett

To me you’re precious, I adore only you
Alone I wait, my heart is yearning
Come my love, abide with me
The nights are long
The days are gray
The sunshine of your smile, I miss
No other one can cheer and comfort me
Heed my prayer and return to me, fair one
Come to my arms
Beloved
I know that you are true to me
