We are going on almost 20 years of Nā Palapalai its talented members and its uniquely Big Island sound. We started in the early 90’s backing up Akoni as Da Palapalai Patch, singing our hearts out to Moku O Keawe songs from him and his Tutu, Ida Kahele. Later, as Kuana, Kehau and Wailau we became full fledged ferns, Nā Palapalai. Hilo’s own. We were determined to hit it big and started with every seedy bar, backyard pa‘ina, Tuesday fundraiser and funeral we could get our hands on.

We continued to seek out sources for traditional Hawaiian songs we could reintroduce and include in our repertoire. We were taken under the wing of Keli‘i Joy, Sam Bernard and The Kalimas, Alberta and Alvin. Uncle Johnny Lum Ho, of course, had a big influence in our sound and writing style. We wanted to keep it Big Island, keep it traditional Hawaiian, but with a fresh twist.

2012 brings us to our newest release, HA‘A. It is a tribute to our fans whom have somehow, Mahalo Ke Akua, become a Hawaiian music army, worldwide. Your unwavering support humbles us every day. We also dedicate this to all the hula dancers around the world, in countries we could have never dreamed of. It is for you that we sing.

We Aloha you all. The shy, keiki hula, the serious competition hula dancers, the ones who kāholo when they clean their hale. It is for you that we sing.

If you Kalākaua in the shower, we bid Aloha to you. Mahalo to the Aunties dancing hula in the front row with a beer in one hand and smoke meat in the other. It is indeed for you that we sing.

We most humbly offer you, HA‘A.
Now get up and dance.
